a glimpse into what's keeping me up at night
For the past two weeks (since I bought my Synology NAS), I have not been able to see the iTunes server that I was running on the NAS from my laptop. This really puzzled me as I was able to connect to the iTunes server from my home desktop and Mvo's MacBook. I fiddled around the settings of iTunes on my laptop for a bit in the iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Sharing section and nothing seemed to work.
I finally figured out last night that the Shared Libraries source option in the General section of Preferences needed to be ticked. See the screenshot below. Once that checkbox is ticked, I could immediately see the NAS iTunes server under the Shared header in the left sidebar.
Why is this important? It's because eventually, I intend to have all my music and other media files located centrally in one location on my LAN and serve them out to other PCs or media consumption devices through an iTunes server (DAAP) or Home Share (AirPlay), and controlled via the Remote app on my iPhone. I still need to figure out the finer details of how the set up should be, and this is an important first step towards that.
On a related side note, for the folks with a large FLAC library, this provides a simple and clear set of instructions to converting FLAC files to MP3 for improved portability. It works fast too! Note that some of the screenshots are slightly dated, but by and large is still relevant.
On to Singapore!
